  • Mr. Herberts’ Donors Choose project - Now through March 1st the donors choose website will match donations dollar for dollar if our donors use the code SPARK when checking out!!

My Project: We can learn about the brain in stations and activities, by reading, or on the internet, but how many middle school children have the opportunity to hold a brain in their hands?

In previous quarters, I have spent my own money to purchase one sheep brain, so that each class could put on pairs of gloves, and pass it around. The ability to hold an organ that held the thoughts, feelings, and memory of another organism is awe-inspiring, and the students always leave with a look of wonder and curiosity.

In the upcoming quarter, I would like to offer students the opportunity to handle and dissect a brain in small groups, allowing them to see, feel, identify, and even color dye the parts of the brain. I am hoping that the experience will be memorable, and have a lasting impact on their interest in science.

This project will serve our 6th and 7th-grade students during the 3rd quarter. If it is successful, we may arrange another donors choose project for the fourth quarter, and attempt to seek grant funding to continue this activity in the following year. This opportunity seeks to teach and inspire, to expose students to something new, and to help them to see that our community is a place where learning can be exciting.
